A Penny For My Thoughts

He Was America's Thriller - Now He's Off The Wall

By Paul Wein

There are tons of famous people in this world. Some are stars that become extremely huge at one point only to burn out real fast - and some reach the status of legend and are remembered long after they pass on. Names like Elvis Presley, Neil Armstrong, Babe Ruth and John Fitzgerald Kennedy will forever be remembered as true American icons. There are also unfortunately some celebrities that were very famous and very well liked and respected - until they did something that turned society against them - and forever scarred their names and reputations. Names like OJ Simpson, Monica Lewinsky, Winona Ryder and Mike Tyson, while once famous - will now be forever remembered not for their significant accomplishments, but instead for their now infamous acts.

Yesterday, another famous name was added to the list of infamous celebrities that will no longer hold the respect and admiration of the American people. A celebrity that was once so popular, he still holds the distinction of having the biggest selling album in music history. A celebrity that has been famous and talented since 1960 when he was just a child. And a celebrity that, through his own criminal actions and twisted lifestyle - has slowly tarnished his own reputation over time until yesterday when he finally rusted it - Michael Jackson.

For the second time in ten years, a child - this time a 12-year-old recovering cancer patient - has accused Jackson of sexually molesting him. The first time was in December, 1993 when a 13-year-old boy accused him of the same thing. In a very detailed affidavit filed by the first alleged victim ten years ago, the boy claimed that while he stayed at Jackson's Neverland Ranch, Jackson did everything to him from, "masturbating me to a climax" to "placing his tongue in my mouth". The report also alleged that when the boy refused Jackson's advances, "Michael would start crying and said that I did not love him as much as his other friends who would let Michael Jackson put his tongue in their mouths."

As I read the four page report, I was, quite frankly, not surprised at all at the child's accusations of the former, "King of Pop." For the last fifteen years, Jackson has lived a life of a disturbed and confused recluse, who has spent ridiculous amounts of time and money bleaching his skin and re-shaping his face - and enormous amounts of time with children - too much time if you ask me - behind close doors at Neverland far away from the media, the public - and the children's parents.

It is the parents of the children that stayed at Neverland that I am furious at, even more than I am at Michael Jackson. Granted, Michael Jackson is a superstar - and an extremely rich one at that. But that does not make him a Saint or a normal person. He refuses to appear in public without a mask on his face and an umbrella over his head. He recently dangled his baby over a balcony in a very public - and very stupid personal appearance. And he paid off the last person who accused him of sexual abuse - something that to me is a clear admission of guilt - because I certainly would not pay anyone off who accused me of something I didn't do. So with all of these displays of odd, dangerous and even criminal behavior - why would any parent allow their child to spend time with him - alone and unsupervised?

At this point, even if Jackson is acquitted on all charges, his reputation - or whatever is left of it - will not be able to recover this time. Before this latest accusation, Jackson still had somewhat of a fan base in the United States and was still seen as one of music's most successful artists. But now - I doubt any American will run out and buy his latest album, attend one of his concerts - or watch one of his specials - especially since CBS just pulled a television special on Jackson that was scheduled to air on November 26th.

And now, as the world waits for Michael Jackson to turn himself in - and for more alleged victims of Michael Jackson to come forward - we all get to watch another celebrity that had the world at his fingertips watch everything he has ever worked for slip right through those very same fingers. We get to watch a man who moonwalked across a stage on May 16, 1983 at Motown's 25th Anniversary Celebration, walk right into a police station and be arraigned on charges of sexual abuse. We get to buy newspapers with headlines like "Sicko!" and "Jacko: Now Get Out Of This One" across their front pages after buying so many of his albums - that he outsold both the Beatles and Elvis Presley. And worst of all - we will get to see Jackson try and weasel his way out of these charges by hiring notorious and unscrupulous lawyers such as Mark Geragos, the man who is currently representing another "innocent" and infamous American Icon - Scott Peterson.

Let's just hope that after this latest chapter in Jackson's twisted life - he will finally "Beat It."
