A Penny For My Thoughts

I Got Sick

By Paul Wein

This week, if you can believe it, I contracted the flu, contracted strep throat, had an operation on my thumb, and needed my wisdom tooth extracted. I don’t think that I have ever been as sick in my life as I was this week.

When you are lying there after having your second surgery of the week, you can’t help but think about just how important it is to be healthy and to take care of yourself. I must admit that this job, along with the many other things I do in my life, have recently burned me out. Judging from what happened to me this week, that’s no secret.

When your body turns against you, it’s no fun. Being the type of person who is constantly on the go and always doing something, when you simply have no strength and can not do anything but lie down in pain, your schedule gets messed up.

I am telling you of my horrible week to hopefully help you avoid having the same thing happen to you. Here are some of my tips to help keep yourself healthy when you have an active lifestyle:

• Always make sure that you eat something in the morning and carry something on you to eat when you have no time for lunch like a banana, or a can of Ensure; something that will make your stomach think you had a meal.
• Try to get the proper amount of sleep at night. Or make the sleep you get count. Try to go to sleep at a reasonable hour and make the sleep you get worth it. Don’t watch TV or read a book, just go to bed.
• Try not to do more than a few things at once. Always remember that the more things you do at the same time, the less your body will be able to function.
• Whatever you eat, make sure that it is filling and healthy. I am the biggest fan of Taco Bell that you can imagine, but if you have one meal a day, try and make it a more healthy one.
• Know your limits. If you are run down, hungry and tired, and are invited out for the evening, don’t go. Stay home and get some rest. Believe me, one night’s rest equals a few day’s work.

You probably think I’m crazy, but if I would have done these simple things, maybe I would not have been so sick this week. So take my advice, and live a healthier life. I plan to!
