A Penny For My Thoughts

That's Why They Are The Greatest Team In Baseball

By Paul Wein

This morning, I have no voice left, no nails left, and am exhausted from no sleep - but it was all worth it - because for the 39th time - the Yankees are going to the World Series as American League Champions.

No matter if the Yankees beat the Florida Marlins or not, the seven game see-saw battle between the Yanks and their arch rival Boston Red Sox will easily overshadow this year's World Series. From Game 1, which I had the honor of attending, the ALCS Championship Series had a feeling of electricity that rivaled any World Series in recent memory. And as the series progressed, it went from a battle to an all out war. From error-filled games, to fans getting into fistfights - to Red Sox Pitcher Pedro Martinez shoving 72-year-old Don Zimmer to the ground which cleared the benches - this seven game series to me was the true World Series of 2003.

If this series proved anything, it proved that the Yankees are indeed the true kings of baseball. Faced with two teams that put them to the ultimate test - the Yankees bit, scratched and clawed their way past the Minnesota Twins only to face an even tougher battle with the Red Sox. With each game that passed, the Red Sox got tougher and harder to beat. From their pitching to their strong outfield to their very powerful hitters - the Red Sox were true opponents that took the Yankees to the very end. But true to their name - they prevailed again - and will now head to the World Series where they belong.

Even last night when the game was half over, myself and everyone else thought the Red Sox would be the ones going to the World Series - even the workers at Fenway Park - who were busy painting the World Series logo on the field before the game came to an end. But when Aaron Boone hit that home run over the left field fence off of Tim Wakefield - everyone - including the Red Sox - realized why the Yankees have 39 pennants and 26 World Series championships under their belt. They knew right there why the blue and white pinstripes are the most recognizable uniform in all of sports - and they knew exactly why the Yankees carry the nickname "Team of the Century." I hope this morning as I enjoy the Yankees victory - that the Red Sox, and their fans enjoy seeing headlines like "Ka-Boone" and "The Curse Lives" - and I also hope that those workers at Fenway enjoy spending today washing the World Series logo off of their field.

Tomorrow night is Game 1 of the World Series and I cannot wait to watch the Yankees do to the Florida Marlins what they did to the Twins and the Red Sox - send them home winless. My prediction? Yankees in six games - GO YANKS!

Sorry Mary - I love you anyway
