Total Recall
By Paul Wein
There have been some pretty memorable elections in the history of this great nation, most recently the historic 2000 Presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. But of all the elections in recent memory - none are as ridiculous and as much of a rip-off to the American taxpayers as the upcoming California Recall Election that will be held on October 7th.
This election is being held because the current Governor of California, Gray Davis, did such a miserable job as the State's highest official that businesses are leaving the State in record numbers, unemployment is at an all time high - and the State's budget is $87 billion dollars in the red. Realizing this, the voters of California will vote him out of office in this special election on October 7th. What makes this election ludicrous is the number of candidates that are on the ballot to replace Davis.
From Arnold Schwarzenegger, to Different Strokes star Gary Coleman, to a former porn star - there are over one hundred candidates on the ballot. I understand that anyone can run for an elected office, but I think that this election should be held under a circus tent - because that is exactly what it is - a circus.
Tens of millions of dollars are being spent on the election, the lawsuit that tried to stop it, and the appeals decision that reinstated the election, Americans are being forced to watch commercial after commercial offering the views and agendas of these "legitimate" candidates - and the media, God bless them - are making more of a media circus out of this election then they did of the OJ Simpson trial.
I am well aware of the horrible job that Gray Davis did as Governor of California and agree that he should be removed from office, but I think that a little decorum and decency should follow this election - and not the foolish, moronic, embarrassing "event" it has become. From lawsuits, to skeletons in their closets - to those famous "punchcard ballots" that were the focal point of the Gore/Bush election - I feel that this one, simple election is tarnishing the reputation of the American voting process.
With the election less than two weeks away, the "front runner" seems to be "The Running Man" Arnold Schwarzenegger as he receives more and more endorsements from former candidates, California's politicians and unions - and even from Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Whoever wins this election, I just hope that this is the last election that smears the definition of what is the very foundation of American Government - the electoral process.
Look on the bright side, at least the California Recall Election is not as ridiculous as the "Reverend" Al Sharpton running for President.
