A Penny For My Thoughts

Help Me, Take Me, Fix Me, Bring Me, Save Me

By Paul Wein

My life is constantly changing, but one thing has always remained consistent - I am constantly called upon to save everyone I know at one point or another. It seems as if a day does not go by that I am not helping someone with something, taking someone somewhere else, fixing someone's broken something, bringing someone something they need - or saving someone from someone else. This happens so often that I am considering getting a big red "S" across my chest as my next tattoo - and purchasing matching boots and a cape.

If it sounds as if I am complaining, that is not the case. Truth be told, I enjoy helping others for three reasons. First, I have always considered myself to be blessed with the success and good fortune that I have had in my life. Yes, I have had some bad times - especially recently - but it seems as if I am somehow always able to regain hold of myself and continue the success I have always had. And being a firm believer in getting what you give - I help others when I can because, as the old saying goes, "what goes around comes around." I also enjoy helping people because it is flattering to know that people come to me for assistance when they need something or are in trouble - feeling that I have what it takes to be the one to help them in their time of need. And most importantly - it makes me very happy to know that my assistance brought relief to someone's life - and took one thing off of their "to do" list - making their life a little easier, and a lot happier.

I can't even count the times that I have helped someone else, but I do have a few favorites that stay with me. One of my most favorite, and most recent stories is when Kandice's daughter Alexis needed help retrieving a CD from a friend that refused to give it back. Hearing this, I asked Alexis to tell her friend that her, "Uncle Paulie from Brooklyn" wanted to speak to him. Upon getting on the phone - and turning up my accent - I told the kid to do the right thing and return the CD either today or tomorrow, leaving him no other option. The next day, the CD was in her hands where it belonged - and Alexis was a happy lady.

I think that if everyone took the time to help someone at least once a day, there would be a lot less stress and drama in this world. Just taking a few minutes of your time to assist a friend, a co-worker or a loved one with a task that is causing them stress would make them feel a lot better - and you feel a little better too.
