A Penny For My Thoughts

What Is Love?

By Paul Wein

There is a definition for every word in the English language. That definition explains what the particular word is and how to properly use it. Some words have more than one definition and can be used in several forms. But there is only one word that cannot simply be defined or explained. A word that would need its very own dictionary to even come close to being properly defined.

Love.

Love has many different forms, expressions, feelings and emotions attached to it. One person's definition of love can be completely different from another's. It is even possible that one person could have many definitions of love in their own life. But when love in any form is felt and experienced - nothing can even compare to it.

I have many of my own definitions of love in my life. I know that when I come home from work and Beavis runs to me purring and rubs his face on mine when I pick him up that he loves me - and that love is honest. I know that when I go to my sister's house and my niece and nephew run to me and hug me that they love me - and that love is real. I know that when my mother tells me to eat and make sure I wear a warm coat that she loves me - and that love is unconditional. And I know that when dear, true friends like Kandice, Montel and Dee end a phone conversation by telling me that they are glad we are friends and that they care very much about me that they love me - and that love is genuine.

But the strongest definition of love is one that is felt not for a friend, a child, a parent or a family member - but for someone that you choose to give your heart to and share your soul with. A person that will come to know you on a deeper level than anyone else in your life. A person with whom you share intimacy, private thoughts, secrets, fantasies, dreams and hopes with. Someone who can tell exactly what you are thinking and feeling just by looking into your eyes. And someone who makes your heart smile when you hear them utter the words, "I love you."

Even this form of love is unique from one person to another. One couple's love for each other doesn't even come close to another's. But while they may be different in form and style - they are the same in feeling. Nothing is more pure than two people in love. There are people in this world that have celebrated 50th wedding anniversaries, which means that they have shared each other's road of life together for almost the entire journey, sharing the experiences together whether good or bad - but either way unconditionally. They have devoted their lives, hearts and souls to one another. They have watched each other age, succeed, grow, learn, fail, and triumph. They have taken the good times with glory and the bad times with grace. But no matter how high the up or how low the down - they have stuck together and let their love for one another see them through anything.

To me, there is nothing stronger than that. True, unconditional love is the most amazing feeling in the world and cannot be faked, duplicated or half-hearted. It can only be felt when you meet that one person and get a feeling in your heart that is so strong that even thinking of how much you love that person could bring you to tears. A feeling that makes you realize that the love for others that you have experienced, while true and genuine - pales in comparison. A love that makes you want to open your soul as wide as a barn door and let that person in - and shut and lock the door behind them once they enter.

Unfortunately, there are some people that will spend their whole lives never finding that person and never feeling that level of love. How sad that some may never know what that feels like. I feel that the person you are destined to be with, "the one" - can make your life take a tremendous upturn and enhance your life to a degree that you could not reach on your own. So to not find your soulmate and not have that in your life is a true injustice. What a different and wonderful world this would be if everyone found their one true love - and live happily ever after.

For a word with only four letters, love is a pretty powerful word - and an even more powerful feeling.
