A Penny For My Thoughts

Illegal Drugs - Both Prescription And Non

By Paul Wein

Let's face it - there is a serious drug problem in this country, one that gets worse every day. It seems that every time I turn around, I see another selfish drug dealer selling drugs to people that would do anything to get their hands on them. And the problem is that no matter how much we try and fight "the war on drugs" - they become more and more readily available. And the saddest part of this war is that I am not talking about drugs like marijuana, ecstasy and cocaine - I am talking about drugs like Ritalin, Zoloft and Xanax.

This world is so hypocritical when it comes to drugs. We will spend millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours to stop a shipment of cocaine from entering this country - but will gladly approve a drug for depression that has a longer list of side effects than benefits. And the worst part is that we allow companies to sell prescription drugs but arrest those who sell illegal drugs - despite the fact that their method of sale is identical.

When someone is approached with an illegal drug, in most cases, the dealer will offer the potential customer a free "hit" or "joint" or "line" - and then tell them to come back to him for more if they liked it. How is that different from a Pharmaceutical company offering someone with depression a free sample of their drug to try - and then a $10 off coupon for their first prescription?

That right there is this country's biggest problem. We say six is right, but half a dozen is wrong. We arrest a 20-year-old kid for selling three bags of pot on a street corner - but allow Fat-Cat drug makers like Pfizer to rake in billions of dollars by selling a pill in every pharmacy in America that stops acid reflux - but causes abdominal pain and nausea. Amazing.

When are we going to realize that illegal drugs and prescription drugs are the same thing in different packages? When are we going to see that an eight-ball of cocaine and a bottle full of Depakote cost the same, provide the same "quick fix" - and cause the same long-term damage? And more importantly - when are the politicians going to stop taking money from these legal drug dealers and recognize that the head of Bristol Meyers is no better than the head of the Colombian Cartel?

I am not saying that all prescription drugs are bad, I am saying that they are as readily available as the illegal ones. Take a look at Winona Ryder. When she was busted for shoplifting - she had a veritable pharmacy in her bag - right down to liquid Demorol. And you don't have to be a superstar to enjoy the planet's legal drugs, just know what websites to order them from - or make friends with a doctor that is willing to "hook you up."

So great plan America. Let's continue to spend tens of millions of dollars stopping the trafficking of illegal drugs - but allow the sale of tens of millions of legal drugs that do the same thing - but are just easier to get - because after all - it is easier to fake a muscle spasm then meet "Vinny" on the corner.

And a lot safer too.
